Studying can certainly prove to be a challenge, but at the University of Ballarat there are a
wide range of services and facilities to help make things easier.
Aboriginal Education Centre
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students receive educational and community
support at all campuses of our University. Trained staff are available to discuss
policy matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and can provide assistance
with tutorial support, financial, accommodation and childcare matters. General support and assistance
is also available to students across all campuses, with study, computer and common rooms on site at the
Mt Helen, SMB and Horsham Campuses. Students at Ararat and Stawell have access to the facilities at the
larger campuses.

Counselling Service
Counselling is free, confidential and voluntary.
UB Counsellors help students with:
- developing personal skills like motivation,
time management, exam preparation, oral presentations, or working in groups
- understanding the way the University works, interpreting official language, knowing who to ask about what
- choosing the right course or career, or
- dealing with difficult personal situations

Students with Disabilities
UB has a Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) to assist with meeting the requirements of people
with disabilities in gaining access to courses and facilities and in achieving their academic
and training goals. The DLU is staffed by experienced professional workers who have knowledge
and expertise in access and equity issues, and in facilitating adjustments to our educational environment.
If a physical, sensory or learning disability, or a medical or mental health condition
impact on your ability to access University or to achieve your educational goals, then our
DLU staff can assist you in achieving your goals.
Our Disability Liaison Unit offers academic support workers like note takers, can make
alternative assessment arrangements, and provide alternative format materials and adaptive
equipment approriate to your needs.

Health Services
Our Mt Helen Campus (Ballarat) at UB has a friendly and professional health service
available to students from all campuses. Staff include doctors, a nurse and receptionist.
Doctors bulk bill. There is a daily pathology service and pharmacy delivery service.
There is also a hire service for crutches. The Health Centre specialises in travel health,
providing a vaccination service which is available to students and members of the public.

The SMB and Camp Street campuses (Ballarat) are within reach of a full range of health
facilities adjacent to the CBD; inclusive of excellent public and private hospitals,
and other specialist providers. Similarly, professional counselling staff are able to arrange
referrals to a comprehensive network of service providers.
Our Horsham Campus (a five minute walk from the centre of town) is located close to
the Wimmera Health Care Group and Horsham Hospital.
East Grampians Health - Ararat Hospital is available to students at the Ararat Campus,
and students at the Stawell Campus are within walking distance to private medical practices
and the Stawell Hospital.

Student Learning Support
We have a Student Learning Support Centre on all of our campuses. We provide free
learning support to all students, to assist you with managing all types of academic
tasks such as reading, researching, essay preparation, group projects, exam preparation
and much more. Our friendly Student Learning Support staff are available to help overcome
any fundamental problems with your transition to university, and changes in learning environment.

AROUND CAMPUS
Bank
An ATM is located at the Mt Helen (Ballarat) Campus, and is accessible 24 hours a day.
Banking services are easily accessible from each of the TAFE Campuses, due to their central locations.
Book Shop
A branch of Ballarat Books is located at the Mt Helen (Ballarat) Campus, which provides
a wide range of services to students at a discounted rate. Students are able to purchase
prescribed textbooks, reference material, stationery and a selection of fiction and non-fiction books.
A second hand bookshop is located within the Student Association office at the SMB (Ballarat) Campus.
Hospitality uniforms and text books are available at 30 - 50% off original cost.
UB Books at the Horsham Campus is located within the Library, and sells texts to support
University of Ballarat courses at competitive prices. Orders for texts etc. may be placed in
person, by mail, fax or e-mail (email address - a.jardine@ballarat.edu.au). Orders can also be
placed at Stawell & Ararat Campuses. Disks, disk holders, folders, and university apparel are
also available for purchase.

Childcare
Our UB Student Association provides daytime childcare facilities at the Mt Helen Campus
(Ballarat) in a friendly, safe and caring environment for children aged 0 to 6 years.
Facilities are also available at our SMB and Horsham Campuses (within close proximity to the campuses)
so that your children are never too far away from you when you're studying.
Professionally accredited carers specialising in child development cater to your child's
unique physical, social, emotional development and cultural background.

Eating Out
The Horsham, SMB and Mt Helen (Ballarat) Campuses of the University of Ballarat
offer a variety of on-campus eating facilities for students. These range from
coffee shops, cafeterias, mini-supermarkets and vending machines. Local restaurants or
cafés are conveniently located within walking distance from any of our TAFE Campuses.
Library
UB offers an integrated library service across all six campuses.
The library collection includes over 252,000 books, journals, audio-visual
material and equipment and subscribes to over 10,700 journal titles (1,590 in print and 9,112 electronic).
Services available include:
- Assistance locating and retrieving library resources including searching the library catalogue,
CD-ROM, online and full text databases, locating newspaper articles, reference and other materials
- Information Skills programs and training, including basic orientation classes aimed at new students.
Programs run during the first week of each semester and include logging in and using the student network,
searching the library catalogue, searching online full text data-bases
- Flexible study areas available at the Mt Helen and SMB campus libraries
- Assistance with student network and account queries and problems
- Photocopying
- Access to the library collections of other Australian Tertiary Institutions through the
CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program and the National Borrowing Scheme

Fitness and Recreation Facilities
Our SMB Campus (Ballarat) houses a fitness centre which is utilised by staff,
students and our local community. Memberships are offered at discounted prices
to current students, and personalised training programs can be designed to suit your individual needs.
Unisports, located at the Mt Helen Campus (Ballarat), provides a wide range of recreational
and health services to students, staff, and the local community. Attending the fully equipped
gymnasium and eight lane indoor heated swimming pool is a popular pastime among students.
Unisports and the Student Association provide special memberships to students.
The Unisports retail outlet stocks an excellent range of sports products with quality brands
including Speedo, Asics and HITEC at discounted prices for members. Additional facilities
available at Unisports include a multi-purpose gym, rehabilitation centre, gymnastics hall,
dance studio, two tennis courts, squash courts, and an oval. Unisports provide aerobics and
yoga as well as mixed netball and basketball competitions for students.
Many students are able to obtain casual employment with Unisports during their study
and gain valuable experience to supplement their education.
